Beginning in the early eighties in Spanish Town Jamaica, this music developed out of a shift to the prevalence of traditional reggae. At first, it was defined by MCs toasting on top of reggae riddims, rapidly evolving into a unique blend of digital sounds, driving beats, and frequently raw lyrics. The style saw further shifts with the incorporation
